Journalists are Idiots

Submitted by wojo on Sat, 2006-02-11 14:49.

The Tradiotional Media loves to obsess about "blogger ethics." They have a "How dare bloggers pretend to be reporters," attitude. If reporters did their jobs, bloggers wouldn't have to. The latest installment of the "Abramoff Scandall is Bi-partisan" meme shows just how inept journalists have become. It looks like they are unable to do basic research on a Senators voting record.
From "DailyKos":http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/2/11/13265/5486:

  • Abramoff was lobbying against legislation sponsored by Senator Kennedy seeking to increase the minimum wage in the Marianas Islands.
  • Senator Reid supported Kennedy's legislation. He was a cosponsor of it, and spoke in favor of the legislation on the Senate floor. Senator Reid was not asked to intervene to block the legislation.

Conclusion, by any reasonable person, there was no quid pro quo by Reid on this issue. But has AP contacted Senator Reid's office to find out his position on this legislation? Have they looked at his floor statements on it, easily available in the Congressional Record? If they have, they're leaving that key information out.

John Kerry: Better Blogger than Candidate

Submitted by wojo on Sat, 2006-01-21 00:36.

Who is this "John Kerry":http://john-kerry.dailykos.com/user/John%20Kerry kid? His "first post on DailyKos":http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/1/20/175232/080 gets him flying up the recommend list and over 800 comments. Sharpening his political voice, perhaps for a run for office?

All kidding aside, it's fascinating that Kerry saved his most biting critique for "Chris Matthews":http://mediamatters.org/items/200601200009 and not, say...Geroge W. Bush. He's a better blogger than candidate.

Kos Gets It Wrong for Once

Submitted by wojo on Fri, 2006-01-20 02:03.

Don't get me wrong, I usually dig on "Daily Kos":http://dailykos.com, but Kos missed the mark and the joke on this one. In his "Midday open thread":http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/1/19/12814/2654 Kos writes

bq. Not only does the Oregonian editorial board not seem to realize that the Colbert Report is a satirical show, but they purport to speak for the entire media. Hilarious. Did they really need to telegraph to the world how out-of-touch they are?

Kos is referring to an "Oregonian editorial":http://www.oregonlive.com/editorials/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/editorial/1137547509218520.xml&coll=7 about the American Dialect Society's Word of the Year for 2005, "truthiness":http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/01/07/word.contest.ap/. Somehow Kos missed that the editorial, The declineness of political thought is itself a bit of satire containing this gem:

bq. In a moment of what may not have been truthiness, Colbert claimed to have pulled the word of the year "out of my keister." Call us old-fashioned, but we don't think it's right to pat him on the back for such an anatomically unlikely performance.

Maybe, that type of humor doesn't translate south of the "Siskiyous":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siskiyou_Mountains.
