Drunk, or Just Love America?

So tomorrow's US World Cup game is on at 9:55 AM. So am I an drunk if
I go to a bar that early... No, I just really love America! And if you don't join me (even you west coasters at 6:55) than I have to question who you really want to win the war. As my hero, Anne Coulter, would say, "You traitors!" Get a beer tomorrow morning and support the team... and the troops.

Juan Cole V. the Warmongers

Juan Cole rightly lays into Warmonger and Chief, Chris Hitchens, today. Somehow Hitchens found his way into a closed email group formed by academics and policymakers and reprodued an email by Cole. Of course, this being Hitchens, he couldn't attack Cole's actual point, but went after what Hitchens wished his point had been--Iran loves Israel. Cole was simply correcting a mistranslation of a statement by Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that I'm sure you've seen all over the media saying that Israel should be "Wiped from (off) the map."

Cole writes that the idiom does not exist in Persian and Ahmadinejad was actually quoting a statement often made by the late Ayatollah Khomeini, "The occupation regime over Jerusalem should vanish from the page of time." It's not exactly pro-Israel, but it's much different than calling for the extinction of the Jewish nation. If we really want to parse the statement we see that it's seeking the end of the "occupation" and specifically, Israel's control of Jerusalem.

Hitchens and the Right-Wing war machine would rather translate it, "When we get a Nuke we will destroy Israel." Those who don't do any fighting love a good war. Cole is at his best and most ferocious attacking the warmongers and flatly claiming, "Americans are not fighting any more wars in the Middle East against toothless third rate powers. So sit down and shut up."

He continues with a powerful attack...

We are not going to see any more US troops come home in body bags at Dover for the sake of some Cheney affiliate grabbing the petroleum in Iran's Ahvaz fields.
