Song of the Day: Last flowers to the hospital

Yes, the "appliances have gone beserk," Mr. Yorke. I got my hands on a copy of In Rainbows Disc 2 over the holidays and this one is my favorite. They originally recorded it for OK Computer, and pulled it out and dusted it off for the new release. According to some guy on the internet, "The title apparently comes from a sign on the way to Radciffe Hospital in Oxford." My Oxford sources have neither confirmed or denied this, but I love the concept of a sign warning you that it is your last chance to buy Mum some flowers being turned into a melancholy Radiohead ballad by Oxford's favorite bard. The best sign I ever saw was in Bosnia. It had a standard "Handicap Parking" wheelchair guy, but this badass paraplegic was toting a gun! It was a sign for Veteran's Affairs. On to the music...

Radihead tries to go green on tours

Good call Yorkie!  Punish those suburbanites for their white flight.

Thom Yorke on the Climate Impact of Touring -- Wired
Yorke: We always go into a tour saying, "This time, we're not going to spend the money. This time we're going to do it stripped down." And then it's, "Oh, but we do need this keyboard. And these lights." But at the moment we make money principally from touring. Which is hard for me to reconcile because I don't like all the energy consumption, the travel. It's an ecological disaster, traveling, touring.

Byrne: Well, there are the biodiesel buses and all that.

Yorke: Yeah, it depends where you get your biodiesel from. There are ways to minimize it. We did one of those carbon footprint things recently where they assessed the last period of touring we did and tried to work out where the biggest problems were. And it was obviously everybody traveling to the shows.

Byrne: Oh, you mean the audience.

Yorke: Yeah. Especially in the US. Everybody drives. So how the hell are we going to address that? The idea is that we play in municipal places with some transport system alternative to cars. And minimize flying equipment, shipping everything. We can't be shipped, though.

This changed my life

Just when I was really sick of all the music I steal, something comes along to save the day. It reminds me of how the French must of felt after the invasion force landed at Normandy ("We surrender to them now?")

I keep waiting for the catch. Sweet tunes and a computer to tell me what I like, what could go wrong? Enjoy now--Rupert Murdoch will probably buy it next week.

I suggest Vanilla Ice....

It's no rap blogging, but...

Submitted by kp on Fri, 2006-02-17 16:26.

With very little time on my hands, the blooging urge doesn't hit me so often anymore. But Jackson Browne has a cover of the Chieftans' song "The Rebel Jesus" that has me in tears every time I hear it. So even though it starts as a Christmas song, the lyrics in full...

All the streets are filled with laughter and light
And the music of the season
And the merchants' windows are all bright
With the faces of the children
And the families hurrying to their homes
As the sky darkens and freezes
They'll be gathering around the hearths and tales
Giving thanks for all God's graces
And the birth of the rebel Jesus
